Fences fail at the posts, so ours are set below the frost line in concrete, plumb, and on a line confirmed against your property survey rather than against the neighbor's existing fence.

Decks are permitted where the code requires it, with proper footings, ledger flashing, and hardware. Ledger flashing in particular is the detail that decides whether your rim joist is sound in fifteen years.

Do I need a permit for a fence or deck?

Fences often need one depending on height and municipality. Decks over a certain height nearly always do. We confirm for your specific address before quoting rather than after.

How deep should fence posts be?

Below the frost line, which in our area means a minimum of thirty inches and deeper for gate and corner posts carrying load. Shallow posts are why fences lean after two winters.

Can you build a deck onto an existing patio?

Usually yes, though footings still need to reach undisturbed soil below the patio base. We will look at whether a deck or an extended patio is the better answer for your grade.
